Beth is England Team Coach!

For 2 weeks at the start of February, I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime, to be part of the England Athletics Team Coaching staff for an international series in Melbourne Australia.

The Nitro Athletics series was a new concept, based on market research, to raise the profile and level of public interest in the sports, and was a total transition from traditional athletics.

One of the first challenges was managing the transport of 16ft bags of pole vault poles from Heathrow to Melbourne, which itself was a mission, involving numerous security departments (and a few arguments) - however even with a change of plan at Bangkok it was mission complete and we were ready.

After a few days of jet lag recovery, it was competition time and 6 teams of 24 athletes went head to head: Australia, England, New Zealand, Japan, China & Usain Bolt's ALL STARS!

With races including the elimination mile (back markers pulled off the track each lap), a mixed hurdle relay, and various mixed medley / sprint events the series felt like a supped up school sports day, with a fantastic atmosphere!

Being responsible for the field event athletes across the 3 event series meant I was in charge of a whole different format of Pole Vault competition (just 4 jumps!), a mixed Long Jump event, and Javelin comps with target zones for bonus points!

The whole 'show' centered around Usain Bolt & his All star team, forming a fantastic rivalry against the Australian hosts.

After 15 years of coaching athletics, this was an absolutely amazing experience, and a real honour to be asked to be part of the England Team Coaching staff – hopefully one to be repeated!

Thanks must go to Sport Stevenage, having supported my coaching development long in advance of this opportunity!

Community Asset Fund

Sport England has launched a new funding programme to improve spaces in local communities. Sports clubs and community organisations will be able to apply for the fund, which is dedicated to enhancing spaces that give people the opportunity to be active. As such councils may wish to share this information with their local networks. As well as traditional sports facilities where people enjoy physical activity, there are thousands of outdoor spaces up and down the country – like canal towpaths, woodlands and open spaces – all with great potential to be used and enjoyed as part of an active lifestyle. To help with the development of ideas, there’s a new guide about the Community Asset Fund.
